Azurite is a deep-blue copper-based mineral discovered long ago by ancient civilizations as far back as 2600 BCE. Like other vibrant minerals, it was often used to create pigments for construction and art. Some of the first deposits of azurite were discovered in Europe but today its is notably found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Australia, Namibia, and parts of the United States in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Oven time, weathering will cause the surface to of azurite to lighten, turning into another beloved mineral known as malachite.
